What is IP65?

IP65 is one of the protection level standards for electrical equipment enclosures established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Similar ones include IP44, IP68, etc.
IP65 is not a single concept, it consists of 3 parts. IP (protection level) and a number representing solid protection capability (0-6) and a number representing liquid protection capability (0-9).
The number 6 represents that the electrical enclosure is completely sealed and can resist dust from corroding the internal circuit.
The other number 5 represents that the electrical equipment enclosure can withstand low-pressure water jets from different directions, such as daily rain and tap water flushing.
Why is IP65 so important for electric vehicle chargers?
The main reason why IP65 is so important for electric vehicle chargers is that it is dustproof, waterproof, and has the effects on safety and durability, as follows:
Dustproof
When too much dust enters the charger, it will interfere with the work of the circuit board, which will affect the internal heat dissipation and reduce the charging efficiency. In severe cases, it may even cause an internal short circuit, which will cause a fire.
Therefore, electric car chargers with IP65 or higher protection levels can better help the internal circuit board of the charger avoid dust intrusion and ensure charging safety and efficiency.
Waterproof
Since many electric vehicle chargers are installed outdoors, they often encounter weather problems such as rain, snow, and fog. The IP65 protection level is precisely to ensure that the charger can still work normally even in these scenarios.
Maintenance cost
In addition, due to the dustproof and waterproof effects of IP65, the circuit board inside the charger can be ensured to be in a relatively stable environment, and we do not need to perform too much maintenance, thereby reducing our maintenance costs.
Moreover, the installation scenario of the charger with IP65 protection is more flexible, and even in some more complex environments, the charger can be guaranteed to work stably.
Is the higher the IP level, the better?
I believe that many people will mistakenly think that the higher the IP rating, the better. Therefore, even if it is the same product, if an IP rating is higher but the price is more expensive, people are usually willing to spend more money to buy a product with a higher IP rating. This is because many people have fallen into the misunderstanding that "the higher the IP rating, the stronger the protection ability".
Take our most common IP68 and IP65 for comparison. If we look at it according to the protection level, IP68 ranks behind IP65, and from the description, IP68 should have stronger protection than IP65. But the actual result may be beyond our expectations. IP68 and IP65 are actually not related!
In other words, electronic devices with IP68 protection capabilities do not necessarily meet the protection capabilities of IP65. Similarly, electronic devices with IP69 protection capabilities do not necessarily meet the protection capabilities of IP68. Therefore, in terms of protection against liquids, it is actually divided into three types for independent judgment:
- Dripping and spraying test: The protection ability test of the object against dripping or low-pressure spraying, from 1 to 6. The higher the number, the stronger the ability of the object to resist dripping and spraying.
- Immersion test: When the object is completely immersed in water, the protection ability is tested, from 7 to 8. The higher the number, the stronger the object's ability to resist liquid immersion.
- High temperature and high pressure spray test: When the object is subjected to high temperature and high pressure spray, the protection ability is tested, there is only one number 9. This test is mainly for industrial equipment, so it is difficult for us to use it in our lives.
After understanding the above criteria, if the merchant puts the same product in front of us, but the two have different protection levels and prices, we should rationally consider which one is more suitable for our product.
Can IP65 coexist with IP67 and IP68?
Since IP65, IP67, and IP68 are rated separately, they can coexist. If an electric car charger passes both IP65 and IP68 tests, we can use the "/" separator to identify them. For example, Sony once launched a mobile phone that meets both protection levels.
